Fokas Nchimbi, Community Education Coordinator
Fokas Alois Nchimbi was born in southern Tanzania, near the great Lake Nyasa in February of 1968. His life is the continuing story of progress and education-his own, and the work he has begun to enable the learning and personal growth of others. Nchimbi has a Master's degree in linguistics from the University of Dar es Salaam, a B.A. in education from the same institution, as well as a diploma in education from the Mpwampwa Teachers College for instructing political science, history, and Kiswahili. He has taught Kiswahili and other subjects under a great variety of circumstances-from tutoring foreign univrersity students and businessmen in their homes and offices in Dar es Salaam to teaching general studies in Tanzanian secondary schools. He recently completed a year-long stint as a language instructor and program coordinator for the Peace Corps.
If there is a single word to describe Nchimbi's vision and his life work, it is "focused." From his own travels through Tanzanian society, which began in one of the least developed and most marginalized, rural areas of the country, Nchimbi has come to believe that education, more than any other factor, is the key to success in the ability to cope with life's ongoing obstacles and opportunities. In the final chapter of obtaining his Master's degree, Nchimbi dedicated his dissertation:
"To all those who are marginalized and disadvantaged all over the world, now and over all the centuries; so that through their own struggles and any assistance accessible to them, they may know the truth in order to become more and more and more conscious, confident, and free human beings."
