Connections

The partnership between the House of Peace and Love Project in Visiga, Tanzania, and the Portland Challenge event in Portland, Oregon, USA, began with a simple idea: that ordinary people in the United States can do something to help ordinary people in Tanzania. The original premise behind the Portland Challenge event was a dare to cross the Willamette River. When an additional dare, to help raise money for the HPLP, was added, that opened up an avenue for cultural exchange.

Since the founding of the HPLP, nearly two dozen Portlanders have traveled to Tanzania to visit, volunteer, and assist in the implementation of the HPLP. Each visitor has returned home with a first-hand knowledge of what it is like to assist in the development of a community education project in sub-Saharan Africa.

As the HPLP expands and develops in the years to come, there will be increasing opportunities for Portlanders, and volunteers the world over, to visit, teach and intern at the HPLP in Tanzania.
